Perinatal Psychology Consultation
The transition to parenthood is one of the most profound, overwhelming and transformative periods in a person's life. Between expectation and reality, new identities are born — but so are fears, insecurities and heavy silences. At Clínica Bem Me Quero, perinatal psychology offers a safe, specialised embrace for women, men and couples, from family planning and pregnancy through to the baby's first years.
We know this journey is not always linear. Far from romanticising or judging, we are here to validate your pain and help you navigate the lights and shadows of this phase, nurturing your emotional wellbeing and the building of a serene bond with your baby.
We support and accompany you through challenges such as:
- Anxiety and fears during pregnancy or birth
- Postnatal depression and the baby blues
- Difficulties bonding and connecting with the baby
- Infertility and medically assisted reproduction (MAR)
- Pregnancy or neonatal loss and parental grief
- Adjusting to the new couple dynamic and the parental role
Our consultations take place in person, in Lisbon and Porto, or online, allowing you to have this support without the worry of leaving home or disrupting the baby's routine.
Frequently asked questions
I feel sad, exhausted and guilty after the birth of my baby. Does that mean I have postnatal depression?
Not necessarily, but it is a sign that you need care and support. In the first 10 to 14 days after birth, the 'baby blues' are very common: an emotional dip and tearfulness caused by hormonal changes and exhaustion. However, if these feelings of deep sadness, despair, constant anxiety or guilt persist and make your daily life difficult, you may be experiencing postnatal depression. The consultation will help you understand what you are feeling and restore your stability, without any judgement. No mother or father should suffer in silence.
Can my partner also take part in the sessions?
Yes, of course. Parenthood transforms the structure of the whole family and couple system. A partner can not only face their own emotional challenges and experience perinatal anxiety or depression, but is also an essential part of mutual support. Sessions can be held individually or as a couple, depending on your needs and on what makes the most sense at each stage of the process.
How do online sessions work with a newborn at home?
We know how challenging the logistics can be with a newborn. That is why the online format is the most chosen at this stage. Our sessions adapt entirely to your reality: if you need to breastfeed, give a bottle, rock the baby, or if they cry during the session, the space remains completely yours. The psychologist is there to move at your pace, ensuring that caring for your mental health does not become one more source of stress.
We went through a pregnancy loss. Can perinatal psychology help us grieve?
We are deeply sorry for your loss. Pregnancy or neonatal loss is, sadly, a grief that is often invisible and dismissed by society, yet it leaves immense pain. The perinatal psychology consultation offers a sacred space to cry, to honour your story and to process grief in your own time. We also support couples who, after a loss, are experiencing a subsequent pregnancy with great anxiety and fear.
Do you have agreements with any insurer or health subsystem?
We don't have direct agreements with insurers or health entities. However, fortunately the vast majority of insurers and health subsystems already reimburse a significant percentage of the cost of private sessions. We suggest you check the specific conditions and coverage with your insurer. If reimbursement doesn't apply in your case, all our invoices are issued with your tax number, so they are automatically included in your IRS tax return as health expenses, where you are entitled to the corresponding deduction.
