Psychiatry Consultation
The psychiatry consultation at Clínica Bem Me Quero is born from the conviction that mental and physical health are deeply interconnected. There are moments when the complexity of emotional suffering is reflected in our body and our biology, calling for a specialist medical perspective that is attentive and compassionate.
Far from cold or stigmatising views, our approach to psychiatry is integrative, deeply human and focused on you. Here, medication is not seen as a single answer, but as a support tool that, when needed, helps to restore balance and give you back the stability you need to live — and to carry out your therapeutic process — with greater wellbeing and serenity.
There is close coordination with the psychology team, ensuring excellent care for adults.
Consultations are available in an online format.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a Psychology and a Psychiatry consultation?
Although both specialities care for mental health, they follow different, complementary paths. The psychologist focuses on understanding patterns of thought, behaviour, life history and emotional regulation through psychotherapy. The psychiatrist is a specialist doctor who assesses the biological and neurochemical component of suffering, and is able to prescribe medication when the body needs support to recover its balance. At Clínica Bem Me Quero, both specialities work in harmony.
Does going to a psychiatrist mean I'll definitely have to take medication?
Not necessarily. The first consultation is for a detailed medical and clinical assessment of your situation. The psychiatrist will consider whether there is a need to introduce pharmacological support or whether other strategies are enough. If medication is recommended, the reasons behind it and the expected effects will be explained to you in detail, and all your questions will be answered. The decision is always made together with you!
If I start taking psychiatric medication, will I be dependent on it forever?
This is one of the biggest myths in mental health. Most modern medications used in psychiatry do not cause dependence. Medication works like a cast for a broken bone: it provides the support you need while the body recovers. Treatment has a beginning, a middle and an end. The whole process of coming off medication is planned and guided by the doctor, at your own pace and in a completely safe way.
I already go to psychology sessions. Is it worth going to a psychiatry consultation too?
In many situations, combining psychology with psychiatric support is the most effective path to recovery (what is known as combined treatment). When symptoms of anxiety, sadness or insomnia are very intense, it can be hard to focus or make progress in therapy. Psychiatry helps to 'calm the biological storm', allowing psychotherapy to do its work more deeply. You can always talk to your psychologist and discuss this.
How do the follow-up consultations (the later sessions) work?
The first consultation is dedicated to assessment and diagnosis. The follow-up consultations are there to monitor your progress, see how you are adjusting to any medication, adjust doses if needed and assess your overall wellbeing. As you begin to feel better and more stable, these consultations become increasingly spaced out.
Do you have agreements with any insurer or health subsystem?
We don't have direct agreements with insurers or health entities. However, fortunately the vast majority of insurers and health subsystems already reimburse a significant percentage of the cost of private sessions. We suggest you check the specific conditions and coverage with your insurer. If reimbursement doesn't apply in your case, all our invoices are issued with your tax number, so they are automatically included in your IRS tax return as health expenses, where you are entitled to the corresponding deduction.
