Autism Assessment and Intervention

Autism is not a label or a frame we try to fit someone into; it is a deep, singular and different way of feeling, communicating and experiencing reality. Often, the path to finding an answer is long and full of doubts. At Clínica Bem Me Quero, we offer a safe harbour, free of judgement, focused on understanding your profile, drawing on your strengths and offering the support you need to feel truly understood.

How does the assessment process work?

We carry out thorough, detailed assessments, structured with the utmost sensitivity. On average, the process spans 4 to 5 sessions, but we always adapt to the uniqueness of each case. The time spent at each stage depends on you: we understand that every story moves at its own pace, so the number of sessions may be fewer or more, always ensuring the greatest possible sense of safety and clinical rigour. The assessment is followed by an individualised intervention plan.

This specialised service is available in person, exclusively at our clinic in Lisbon, and also online.

Frequently asked questions

I'm an adult. Does it still make sense to seek an autism assessment at this stage of life?

Yes, it makes complete sense. Many adults have spent their whole lives feeling they operated on a different 'wavelength' from other people, often resorting to masking (the unconscious effort of camouflaging their characteristics in order to fit in). Discovering that you are autistic in adulthood is a deeply transformative process. It brings answers to old wounds, validates the way you feel and allows you to build a life with more self-compassion, respecting your limits and your sensory and social needs.

Can the autism assessment for adults be done online?

Yes, perfectly. As with ADHD, most of the adults who come to us choose the online format. The entire process — which is based on in-depth clinical interviews, sharing your developmental history and applying assessment instruments validated for adults — transfers perfectly to the digital environment. Being in the safe, controlled setting of your own home allows you to express yourself with far greater authenticity and less sensory overload.

What is the family's role in assessing an adult? Is a parental account mandatory?

Although it is helpful to understand what your early years were like (through accounts from parents, older relatives or childhood records), it is not mandatory. We know that gathering this is not always possible or comfortable. The process is fully prepared to focus on your own lived experience, your memories and the way you experience the world today.

What is the difference between Assessment and Intervention in adult autism?

The Assessment is the initial stage (around 4 to 5 sessions) to understand your neurodivergent profile and confirm the diagnosis. The Intervention is the ongoing process that follows afterwards, if it makes sense for you. In intervention with adults, we don't try to 'correct' behaviours or make you appear neurotypical. The focus is on giving you tools for emotional regulation, helping you manage exhaustion (autistic burnout), understand your sensory profile and support your communication and relationships in an authentic way.

Do you have agreements with any insurer or health subsystem?

We don't have direct agreements with insurers or health entities. However, fortunately the vast majority of insurers and health subsystems already reimburse a significant percentage of the cost of private sessions. We suggest you check the specific conditions and coverage with your insurer. If reimbursement doesn't apply in your case, all our invoices are issued with your tax number, so they are automatically included in your IRS tax return as health expenses, where you are entitled to the corresponding deduction.
